New Less Risky Liposuction Technique

Liposuction has come a long way since its inception, with the development of new technologies designed to remove fat more efficiently. Now, a new study reveals what works, and what doesn’t, and which techniques are safest.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide, and the development of new techniques has provided plastic surgeons with a safe and efficient way to shape the human body through fat removal. Now, a new study illustrates what works — and what doesn’t — in liposuction procedures.

Over the years, the technologies and instruments used in liposuction have evolved significantly since its introduction. To determine whether all improvements have been for the better, a group of four plastic surgeons in Cali, Columbia, analyzed outcomes from more than 25 years of liposuction procedures performed on more than 26,000 patients. The study authors found that tumescent liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) have improved the safety of liposuction procedures, reducing the risk of anemia, a common complication affecting 18 percent of all patients, while still delivering the best aesthetic results.

However, there are still some risks with every type of cosmetic surgery procedure. Tumescent liposuction has been shown to increase the risk of post-surgical seromas — a mass or swelling caused by the localized accumulation of serum (a yellowish fluid) within a tissue or organ that can develop after surgery. Also, the incidence of skin necrosis was significantly higher in patients who underwent UAL than for other techniques, which led the study authors to abandon this practice.

Although 90 percent of patients reported experiencing postoperative pain, regardless of the technique that was used, an average of 82 percent of patients were satisfied with the outcome of their procedure, and satisfaction levels were similar for all of the liposuction techniques covered in the review.

Study results appear in the current issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Before deciding on what sort of liposuction would be best, prospective patients are advised to talk to an experienced surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery to discuss the treatment options available. Using a qualified surgeon will increase the odds of success, reduce the risk of complications, and help ensure that the doctor uses the most appropriate procedure — not simply the newest gadget.

Liposuction becoming popular in Britain

More and more Britons are going under the knife as a short-cut to losing weight – and having ever larger amounts of fat removed when they do so.

Transform, the country's biggest cosmetic surgery group, carried out liposuction on 2,016 people last year, up from 1,436 operations in 2008 and well above the 542 it did in 2000. During the same period the average amount of fat taken out rose from 687ml in 2000 to 1.05 litres last year.

The 2,000 litres of body fat removed in 2009 are the equivalent of what a typical chip shop uses in a year to fry its fish and chips, said Transform.

Some 89% of liposuction patients were women. They were most likely to come from Yorkshire (22%), the North West (20%) and North East (18%) with just 3% coming from the South East.

"The amount of fat we are removing through liposuction per patient is on the increase," said Dr Abel Mounir, a consultant plastic surgeon with Transform. "As a nation we are becoming heavier, people are having to work harder to shift weight and liposuction is becoming more popular for those wishing to lose stubborn pockets of fat."

The SmartLipo Triplex is the latest laser liposuction device for high definition bodysculpting, which is all set to revolutionize the field of cosmetic and plastic surgery. It is a modified version of the successfully running SmartLipo MPX. Though both are minimally invasive and offer impeccable results, SmartLipo Triplex stands apart for its power packed use of multi wavelength laser technology (1440, 1064 and 1320 nm).

When compared to invasive and other minimally invasive liposuction devices, SmartLipo Triplex shows its superiority in the following ways:

• Higher absorption of stubborn fat tissues
• Powerful tissue coagulation
• Optimal skin tightening
• Treats almost all fat prone regions of the body

Patients who choose to take advantage of the precision based laser assisted device are administered local anesthesia so as to minimize risk or complications. Furthermore, much of their fear and apprehension is lifted as they remain wide awake during the procedure.

Dr. Spero Theodorou and Dr. Christopher Chia, reputable plastic surgeons of a premier plastic surgery practice in New York City, are the first doctors to test this state-of-the-art device for high definition body sculpting. Both doctors were closely involved in the research and development process of this innovative device. They believe that the new device from Cynosure could be the center of attraction for all men and women who have failed in their battle against unrelenting fat. With countless patients opting for a safe and simple procedure, SmartLipo Triplex could very well make a commendable headway over all other forms of lipolysis.

SmartLipo Triplex is a device with high definition sculpting capabilities. bodySCULPT™, a premier plastic surgery practice in Manhattan, New York City (NYC), offer hi definition laser liposuction for those aspiring to attain an impressive body contour.

Senate Democrats Would no longer tax Liposuction

Your fears of a 5 percent tariff on butt lifts, rhinoplasty, and injectables like Botox and Restylane are over! Senate Democrats have dropped the so-called "Botax," likely after major uproar from the well-moneyed cosmetic surgery industry, which was supposed to raise $5 billion. But don't think Dems have entirely thrown out the idea of taxing America's addiction to aesthetic improvements: The cast of Jersey Shore is about to see their tanning experience get hit with a hike.

In place of Botax is a 10 percent tax on indoor tanning. Or, as the Senate's bill refers to it, the tax will be "intended for the irradiation of an individual by ultraviolet radiation, with wavelengths in air between 200 and 400 nanometers, to induce skin tanning." Which, as far as we're concerned, is a tax on WHITE PEOPLE!

Looks like spray-ons it will be.

Liposuction News : Trendlet - Liposuction then Relocation

The latest kind of recycling entails liposuctioning fat from, say, thighs or buttocks and injecting it into breasts to augment them. After being condemned in the early '90s, this procedure is generating newfound excitement among the handful of doctors nationwide who offer it and patients keen to enlarge their breasts without resorting to implants. Almost 20 years ago, the association now known as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons issued a warning to its member doctors not to inject suctioned fat into patients' breasts, for fear that mammograms would be misread. A second concern was that too little injected fat survived being transplanted, because techniques for harvesting, refining and placing fat were not advanced enough. Even today, the success of fat grafting to the breast depends on the physician. But this year, the plastic surgery society reversed its position. A report from its task force reviewed the limited research on fat grafting to the breast and concluded that it "can be considered a safe method of augmentation." On the issue of mammography, the report said fat grafting "could potentially interfere with breast cancer detection; however, no evidence was found that strongly suggests this interference." The task force's statement: Proceed with caution. And so some have. "The best way to create a normal breast is to use your body's own tissue," said Dr. Sydney Coleman, a Manhattan plastic surgeon who is an advocate of fat grafting. So much so that he no longer offers breast implants.

Liposuction goes into the Future

Liposuction has come a long way in the 35 years since its inception. Today, plastic surgeons and their patients are challenged to choose from a wide range of technologies, including tumescent liposuction, radio frequency, ultrasound, and even laser lipo. In the latest episode of Plastic Surgery Talk, Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Fodor, one of the world’s leading authorities on liposuction, explains the different technologies — and whether newer equals better when it comes to removing excess fat.

It may come as little surprise that liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures today. After all, the idea of simply “sucking away” unwanted fat from nearly any part of the body sounds like a dream come true. Double chin? Jiggly thighs? Belly roll? When it comes to unsightly bumps and bulges, liposuction can be a great solution.

But, that doesn’t mean the procedure should be taken lightly. Too many patients take a cavalier attitude about liposuction and, in some cases, put their bodies in the hands of poorly trained practitioners who have done little more than buy an expensive piece of equipment and complete a weekend course.

“Many people…think liposuction is a simple procedure,” says Dr. Peter Fodor, a leading expert on liposuction technology. “[But] fluids are injected, fluids are in the body, and it potentially can be dangerous. That’s not to say the procedure is not a very safe procedure when it’s performed by people who are properly trained.”

In fact, liposuction is not only safe, but technology has made the procedure more effectual and versatile than ever. Studies show that new developments involving the use of ultrasonic energy, super-wet tumescent techniques, and even non-invasive lipo treatments can deliver great results in less time, and with a shorter recovery.

“There are a bunch of different modifications of the standard technique,” says Dr. Fodor. “These include adding ultrasound energy to the liposuction with the aim of fragmenting the fat cells. Another procedure is called power-assisted lipoplasty — it’s like a sledgehammer advancing the cannula.”

Still, patients should not be duped by a clever marketing message, but rather seek out a board certified plastic surgeon and discuss with their doctor the clinical evidence for results promised by some of the newer liposuction devices. Ultimately, the most critical factor to effective liposuction is not the technology used, notes Dr. Fodor, but the person holding the cannula.
